What is maca?
Maca (Lepidium meyenii) is a root vegetable that grows high in the Andes mountains of Peru, often above 4,000 meters (about 13,000 feet). It is in the same plant family as radish, turnip and broccoli. The roots come in several colors, including cream, yellow, red and black. Local people cook the root, bake it, or drink it as a hot beverage. In supplements it is sold as a powder, capsule or extract.
Why is maca in SodaPower?
Maca has a long name as an "energy root," and it is a favorite in men's wellness products for drive and stamina. In SodaPower it sits beside panax ginseng and cnidium monnieri as a traditional plant for vitality, while guarana brings natural energy.
What do studies look at?
Researchers have studied maca in small trials that usually run about eight to twelve weeks. Some of them looked at sexual desire and mood, and several reported better desire scores compared with a placebo. That interest is a big reason maca has become a staple in formulas made for men.
